New Goldfish Acclimation Guide

Successful Acclimation of Your New Goldfish
A Guide by Garage Aquatics

Welcome, Goldfish Enthusiast!

Thank you for your recent purchase from Garage Aquatics! We’re excited that you’ve chosen one of our beautiful goldfish to join your aquatic family. To ensure a smooth transition for your new friend, we’ve created this step-by-step acclimation guide. Designed specifically for the goldfish we source from Thailand, this process helps them adjust comfortably and safely to their new environment.

Why Acclimation is Crucial

Goldfish need time to adapt to changes in temperature, pH, and water chemistry. A gradual acclimation process minimizes stress and helps maintain their health, giving them the best chance to thrive in their new home.

Preparing for Your Goldfish’s Arrival

Before your fish arrives, ensure your tank—or better yet, a quarantine tank—is ready. Follow these steps:

  1. Set up the tank 48 hours in advance using aged water. You can mix 50% water from your main tank with fresh, dechlorinated water.
  2. Use an API Freshwater Test Kit to verify ideal water parameters:
    • Temperature: 76–78°F (optimal for Thailand-sourced goldfish)
    • pH: 7.0–7.5
    • Ammonia: 0 ppm
    • Nitrites: 0 ppm
    • Nitrates: Below 20 ppm

A separate quarantine tank (10–20 gallons, depending on your goldfish’s size) is highly recommended to observe your fish and prevent potential health issues from spreading to your main tank.

Acclimating Your New Goldfish

When your goldfish arrives, follow these steps:

  1. Dim the lights in the room and tank to reduce stress.
  2. Float the sealed bag in your tank for 15–25 minutes to equalize the temperature.
  3. Open the bag carefully and check the water temperature. The difference between the bag and the tank water should not exceed 3°F.
  4. Slowly add tank water to the bag, a small cup at a time, every 5 minutes, until the bag is nearly full.
  5. Use a net to transfer your goldfish into the quarantine tank. Avoid adding the bag water to your tank.
  6. Keep the tank lights off for 12–24 hours, and do not feed your fish for the first 48 hours.

Completing the Quarantine Process

After at least 7 days of observation in the quarantine tank, your goldfish may be ready to join the main tank. However, the exact timing depends on your fish’s activity level and health.

Important: Transitioning from Quarantine

  1. Temperature: If your main tank is at a lower temperature, reduce the quarantine tank’s temperature gradually (e.g., by 2°F per week) until it matches the main tank.
  2. pH: Ensure the pH difference between the quarantine tank and main tank is less than 0.5. During water changes, you can mix 25% main tank water into the quarantine tank to help your fish adjust. Always verify the main tank’s water quality before mixing.

By following these steps, you’ll set your goldfish up for success and a healthy, happy life. If you have any questions or need further assistance, feel free to reach out to us at Garage Aquatics—we’re here to help!
