FAQ for Thai Ranchu Black Metallic
1. What should I feed my Thai Ranchu Black Metallic?
Feed your Thai Ranchu Black Metallic a diet of high-quality goldfish pellets, flakes, and occasional bloodworms or brine shrimp. You can also offer vegetables such as peas (blanched), spinach, or zucchini. Feed 2-3 times daily, offering only as much as the fish can eat in 2-3 minutes to avoid overfeeding.
2. What is the ideal water temperature for my Thai Ranchu Black Metallic?
The Thai Ranchu Black Metallic thrives in water temperatures between 68°F to 75°F (20°C to 24°C). Consistent water temperature is key to preventing stress and ensuring good health. Avoid temperature fluctuations and use a reliable heater to maintain stability.
3. What size tank does a Thai Ranchu Black Metallic need?
A 20-30 gallon tank is ideal for a single Thai Ranchu Black Metallic. If you plan to keep multiple fish, consider a larger tank of 40 gallons or more to ensure each fish has enough space to swim and grow. Make sure to have a high-quality filtration system to maintain clean water.
4. Can Thai Ranchu Black Metallics be kept with other fish?
Yes, Thai Ranchu Black Metallics are peaceful goldfish and can be kept with other calm goldfish species such as Orandas, Ranchus, or Lionchus. Avoid mixing with aggressive or fast-swimming species, as these may stress out your Ranchu. Always ensure that tank mates are similar in size and temperament.
5. How do I care for the wen (head growth) on my Thai Ranchu Black Metallic?
The wen (head growth) on a Thai Ranchu Black Metallic is delicate and requires regular care. Gently clean the wen with a soft sponge or a toothbrush, using aquarium water to avoid damaging the growth. Keep the water clean and well-maintained to encourage healthy wen development, and avoid aggressive scrubbing.
6. What are common health problems with Thai Ranchu Black Metallic?
Like other goldfish, the Thai Ranchu Black Metallic is susceptible to conditions such as swim bladder disease, Ich, and fin rot. To prevent these issues:
- Regularly perform water changes (20-30% weekly).
- Avoid overfeeding and provide a varied, balanced diet.
- Ensure proper tank filtration to maintain clean water.
- Quarantine any new fish before introducing them to your main tank.
7. How should I acclimate my Thai Ranchu Black Metallic to a new tank?
To acclimate your Thai Ranchu Black Metallic, float the sealed bag in the tank for 15-20 minutes to equalize the temperature. Gradually introduce small amounts of tank water into the bag over 30-60 minutes. Once acclimated, gently release the fish into the tank. This method minimizes shock and helps the fish adjust to the new environment.
8. How long can my Thai Ranchu Black Metallic live?
With proper care, your Thai Ranchu Black Metallic can live between 10-15 years. Regular water changes, a balanced diet, and a clean, stable tank environment will promote a long, healthy life.
9. How fast will my Thai Ranchu Black Metallic grow?
The Thai Ranchu Black Metallic typically grows at a rate of 1 inch per month during its first year, with full adult size usually reached by the age of 2-3 years. Expect your fish to grow to 6-8 inches when fully matured. Growth rate can vary depending on diet, water quality, and tank conditions.
10. What are the distinctive features of the Thai Ranchu Black Metallic?
The Thai Ranchu Black Metallic is known for its deep, lustrous black color and shiny metallic sheen. Unlike other Ranchus, its body is compact and round, and it has well-developed fins. The fish has a distinctive, short body with a prominent wen (head growth) that develops as it matures.
11. Can I breed my Thai Ranchu Black Metallic?
Yes, you can breed your Thai Ranchu Black Metallic under the right conditions. Provide a separate breeding tank, maintain a temperature range of 72°F to 78°F (22°C to 25°C), and ensure proper water quality. Male Ranchus often chase females during the breeding season. Make sure to provide soft plants or spawning mops for the eggs to attach to.
12. How do I prevent illness in my Thai Ranchu Black Metallic?
Prevent illness by:
- Maintaining water quality: Regular water changes and proper filtration are essential.
- Feeding a varied diet: A healthy, balanced diet boosts immunity.
- Avoiding overcrowding: More fish in the tank means more stress, so ensure adequate space.
- Monitoring for signs of illness: If you notice abnormal behavior, such as loss of appetite or erratic swimming, consider isolating the fish and treating it promptly.

FAQs
Please read our FAQs page to find out more.
"What You See is What You Get" collection?
With our "What You See is What You Get" collection, you can view the exact fish you'll be receiving. Each fish is photographed individually, so you know exactly what you're purchasing before it arrives at your door.
Do you offer a live arrival guarantee?
Yes! We offer a 100% live arrival guarantee. Our fish are shipped directly from our collections with care, and we stand behind their quality. If your fish arrive in poor condition, please contact us within 24 hours with a photo, and we’ll provide a replacement or refund, as per our terms and conditions.
What is the Direct from Farm collection?
The Direct from Farm collection is our preorder system where you can select fish directly from our farm in Thailand. Because we carefully source each fish, this process takes a little longer—approximately 2 weeks for the fish to arrive from Thailand and another week for quarantine before being shipped to you. This ensures that your fish are healthy and acclimated before they reach your aquarium.
How do I care for my new fish once they arrive?
When your fish arrive, it’s important to acclimate them gradually to your tank’s water temperature. Ensure your aquarium is fully cycled and that water parameters (temperature, pH, ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate levels) are stable. If you need any tips on setting up your tank or caring for your fish, feel free to reach out!
