Food has a big effect on how a Flowerhorn grows and colors up. The right diet supports the kok (the hump on the head), strong color, and good health. Here is what to feed and how to do it.
What Flowerhorn Need in Their Diet
Flowerhorn are active, hungry cichlids. They do best on a high protein diet with some variety. Color enhancing ingredients such as astaxanthin help bring out the reds and oranges a fish already carries. Food cannot add colors a fish does not have.
Best Types of Food
- High protein pellets. Make these the main staple.
- Frozen foods like bloodworms, krill, and brine shrimp, as a treat.
- Blanched peas, now and then, to help digestion.
Avoid feeder fish. They can carry disease and do not give your fish better nutrition.
Our Titan Flowerhorn Food
Titan is a 3mm floating, high protein pellet made for color and kok development. A floating pellet lets you watch your fish eat, so you can feed the right amount and remove anything left over. You can see all of our food in our premium fish food collection.
How Much and How Often
- Feed small portions one or two times a day.
- Give only what your fish can finish in a couple of minutes.
- Remove uneaten food right away.
- Some keepers skip one feeding day a week to rest the fish's digestion.
Tips for Color and Kok Growth
- Keep water clean. Large, regular water changes help growth and color.
- Keep the water warm. About 80 to 84°F suits Flowerhorn.
- Give a roomy tank. Adults need 75 gallons or more. See our Flowerhorn care guide.
- Be patient. The kok grows with age, and genetics matter most.
Feeding Mistakes to Avoid
- Overfeeding, which fouls the water and can cause bloating.
- Feeding only one food, such as only bloodworms.
- Leaving uneaten food in the tank.
- Feeding food made for other fish. Choose a food made for Flowerhorn.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I feed my Flowerhorn?
One or two small feedings a day is a good plan for most fish.
How do I get a bigger kok?
Good genetics, a quality high protein diet, clean warm water, and time. No food alone will build a kok.
Can Flowerhorn eat goldfish food?
No. Goldfish food is made for a different fish. Use a pellet made for Flowerhorn.
Does color enhancing food really work?
It can bring out the colors a fish already has. It cannot add colors the fish does not carry.
