Buying live fish online sounds risky at first. Will they arrive alive? Will the water be too hot or too cold? Will you get your money back if something goes wrong? The short answer is yes, it is safe, as long as the seller packs correctly and ships the right way. Here is exactly how it works at Garage Aquatics, based in San Diego, CA.

How Live Fish Are Shipped

Every fish is packed the same day it ships. Each fish goes in its own oxygen-filled bag with a small amount of water. The bags go inside an insulated box so the water temperature stays steady during transit.

  • Bagged one fish at a time so fish do not stress or hurt each other.
  • Insulated boxes protect against heat and cold.
  • Heat packs or ice packs are added based on the weather at your address.

Why We Only Ship Live Fish on Mondays and Wednesdays

We pack and ship live fish on Mondays and Wednesdays. This keeps boxes from sitting in a warehouse over the weekend. Your fish leave our San Diego shop and reach you within 1 to 2 days.

Shipping Methods: Overnight and 2-Day Only

Live fish never go by ground shipping. We only offer Next Day Air and 2-Day options for live fish, because longer trips mean more stress and more risk.

Weather matters too. In hot regions during summer, we limit live fish orders to overnight shipping only. If you choose a shipping method that does not match the temperature in your area, your order can be delayed or you may need to upgrade to overnight.

What to Do the Day Your Fish Arrive

  1. Be home on delivery day. Do not leave the box outside in the sun or cold.
  2. Open the box right away and check every bag.
  3. Take a photo or video of the bags and fish before you open them. You need this if there is a problem.
  4. Acclimate slowly. Float the sealed bag, then add tank water a little at a time. Do not pour bag water into your tank.
  5. Keep the lights dim for the first day and skip feeding for a short time.

New to this? Set up a separate quarantine tank before your fish arrive. It protects the fish you already own.

Our DOA (Dead on Arrival) Policy

We want you to know the rules before you order.

  • DOA claims are covered for orders shipped by UPS Next Day Air or UPS 2-Day.
  • You must report the problem within 1 hour of delivery.
  • Send a clear photo or video of the fish in the bag.
  • Approved claims are paid as store credit. Shipping is not refundable.

You can read the full details on our refund policy page.
