Why red fish lose color
Red, orange and crimson color in fish comes from pigments called carotenoids. Fish can't make these on their own, so they have to eat them. In the wild they get them from shrimp, insects and algae. In a tank, they only get what you feed them.
That's why a red betta or red discus can look bright at the store and slowly fade at home. If the food is low in carotenoids, the color has nothing to build from.

What to look for in a red color food
- Canthaxanthin (Carophyll Red): one of the strongest red pigments used in fish food
- Astaxanthin: red and red orange tones, found naturally in shrimp and krill
- Good protein: healthy fish show better color than fish that are just getting by
- The right size: small fish need small pellets they can swallow whole
We made Scarlet for any freshwater fish with red, orange or crimson color. It's a sinking pellet with Carophyll Red, so the color goes into every bite.
How to feed red fish for color
| Fish | Meals per day | Temp | Tip |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discus | 2 to 3 small meals | 82 to 86Β°F | Clean water matters most. Do big weekly water changes. |
| Betta | 1 to 2 small meals | 78 to 82Β°F | Bettas overeat easily. Feed only what they finish in 1 to 2 minutes. |
| Guppy | 1 to 2 small meals | 74 to 82Β°F | Crush pellets for fry and small females. |
For all three, feed only what gets eaten in about 2 minutes and remove leftovers. Most fish show better color after about 3 to 6 weeks of steady feeding.

Other things that affect red color
- Water quality: ammonia, nitrite and high nitrate stress fish and dull color
- Lighting: full spectrum LED lights show red best
- Stress: bullying tankmates, overcrowding and constant moving fade color fast
- Genetics: color food brings out what a fish can show, it won't turn a blue guppy red
FAQ
Is Scarlet safe to feed every day?
Yes. It's made as a daily food. You can rotate in frozen or live foods for variety.
Can I feed Scarlet to angelfish?
Yes, but for red angelfish we made Crimson Rise, a 0.5mm micro pellet sized for them.
Why did my betta lose color after I brought it home?
Shipping and a new tank are stressful. Most bettas color back up in a week or two once they settle in, with clean warm water and a good diet.
