Why orange angelfish fade
Sunset angelfish have a warm golden orange body that deepens with age. Koi angelfish carry orange and red patches over a white or pale body. Both get their warm colors from carotenoids, natural pigments that fish can't make on their own. They have to get them from food.
If the diet is low in carotenoids, a Sunset can look more yellow than orange, and the patches on a Koi can look washed out. Stress, dirty water and dim lighting make it worse. A fish that just shipped will often look pale for a week or two while it settles in.

1. Feed for orange and red
Orange and red come from different pigments, so a good color food uses more than one:
- Astaxanthin: pushes red and red orange tones
- Xanthophylls: yellow and orange tones that build the warm golden base on a Sunset
Our Crimson Rise uses both, in a 0.5mm sinking micro pellet with 48% protein. The small size works for young angelfish, and it sinks through the middle of the tank where angelfish like to eat.
Most fish show better color after about 3 to 6 weeks of steady feeding. Sunsets often get deeper orange as they grow, so good food early pays off later.
2. A note for Koi angelfish
Koi angelfish have white areas next to the orange. Color food can add a slight warm tint to white areas. If you want the white to stay as clean as possible, feed color food as part of a mixed diet instead of every meal.
3. Set up the tank to show warm colors
- Dark background: orange and red pop against black or dark blue
- Dark substrate: fish tend to show stronger color over dark sand or gravel than over white
- Good lighting: full spectrum LED lights show warm tones best
- Plants or decor: fish that feel safe show better color
4. Keep the water clean and stable
Keep ammonia and nitrite at zero and nitrate low with regular water changes. Most angelfish keepers change 20 to 30 percent of the water each week. Keep the temperature steady, around 78 to 82°F. Big swings in temperature or water quality stress fish and fade color.
5. Don't overfeed
More food doesn't mean more color. Feed small amounts once or twice a day, only what your fish eat in about 2 minutes. Leftover food fouls the water and works against you.
FAQ
Why does my Sunset angelfish look yellow?
Young Sunsets often start more golden and deepen to orange as they grow. A diet with color pigments, clean water and a dark background help bring the orange out sooner.
How long does color food take to work?
Usually 3 to 6 weeks of daily feeding. Young fish often color up faster.
Will color food turn my Koi angelfish's white parts orange?
It can add a slight warm tint. Feed it as part of a mixed diet if you want to keep the white clean.
Can I feed Crimson Rise to other fish?
It's made for angelfish. For discus, bettas, guppies and other red fish, check out Scarlet.
